Q.&A. Session

Question: Why should an artist apply for residencies?

Answer:

  • Outside of having dedicated time and facilities to make work, residencies are a great opportunity to meet other artists from all over the world. People often form life long friendships at residencies and make a body of work that they never would have produced in their regular routine.
  • Residencies also offer a rare opportunity to be immersed in another culture, its peoples and artistic traditions. Part research project, part inspired living, many residencies offer lodging, a stipend, a studio, an exhibition for the participating artists and even some teaching experience. Others require a little day labor, help with the groundskeeping, some shared cooking and occasionally, shared quarters.
  • Remember, there is no such thing as a 'typical' residency experience, each is unique and tailored to providing a certain kind of interaction and engagement with the surrounding region, available materials and facilities, other artists and the community at large. Whether rural or urban, stateside or going abroad, try to pick a program that meets your needs artistically, geographically, financially, and is the right kind of time commitment for your schedule as an artist.
