Q.&A. Session.

Question: Why should an artist care about curatorial support?

Answer:

  • Every artist has a few great ideas for shows. While curating is not for everyone, occasionally putting together a show allows you to meet new people and to think critically about the politics of art production, reception and display.
  • Receiving a grant or special funding for a project also helps to demonstrate its merit and looks great on a resume. The art field is a discipline that runs on social capital and curating an exhibition or two is an excellent way to gain further exposure for your ideas about art while helping to raise the public profile of a noteworthy group of emerging or mid-career artists.
  • Try writing up a couple of different proposals so that you always have a variety of options on hand. Curating does require some special skills, but one of the best ways to get good at it is to learn by doing.
