MODULE 14: Art Grants
Q. & A. Session.
Question: Why should an artist care about grants?
- Outside of the obvious prize money and support of your work, art grants also help to validate your work. They show that a knowledgeable panel of experienced art professionals is interested in encouraging your art practice.
- Getting grants is also a big confidence builder and you often end up meeting other important contemporaries at the awards ceremonies or exhibitions that accompany the distribution of the prize or prizes.
- Grants also look great on your resume and speak volumes about your dedication to your career as an artist.
- Remember to keep in mind that no award is too big or to small to pursue. Every award is equally important to the life of the artist receiving it. When you are just starting out, you are more likely to take smaller support and completion grants before landing a big award, but getting smaller awards can lead to getting bigger awards in the future as you build your reputation.
- And remmeber to apply for awards at the student, graduate, emerging, mid-career and blue-chip/established artist levels as well as for medium specific awards.
- Always know what awards are available to you locally, nationally and globally --- and apply, apply, apply!

PART 2: SEARCH LISTING SERVERS FOR GRANT OPPORTUNITIES AND LIST YOUR FAVORITE GRANT SEARCH ENGINES ON QUIZ 14.
Art Grants help to fund your work, your supplies, studio costs, shipping, installation, and even emergencies or additional support to finish a project. Art grants are given to every medium at different points in your career including emerging, mid-career and late recognition as well as for special reasons and art that address social issues.
Every artist should have a list of the top 20 or 30 grants that apply to their work as well as the reoccurring deadlines to apply. Prepare your material well ahead of the application date and check and double check that you have followed all submission guidelines to a tee. Also, make sure to review past grant applications, visit the granting organization if you can, and tailer your application to read like past winners.
Always spend a little time each month looking for new grant opportunities. New awards are constantly being made available just as some old award services run out of funding or support so keeping current on your opportunities is important.
