MODULE 8: Art Portfolio

Q.&A. Session
Question: Why should an artist post their work to a portfolio site?
Answer:
- Portfolio sites are place where your work can be seen by other artists and industry professionals that might not otherwise get a chance to see your work. They tend to display work from the same genre or set of concerns as well as run constests or open calls to submit for placement on the front page. Sometimes they even run contests for monied prizes or inclusion in an on-line gallery exhibtion.
- An artist should be very selective however in what portfolio services they particiapte with. Your work should be comproble in quality and accomplishment to the other work carried on the site and you should review the terms and conditions of being on any profolio site in detail.
- You should be able to post up your work or take it down anytime you want as well as edit your account as you go.
- Many portfolio sites also double as sales sites, so it's important to check and see if this is in addition to exhibiting the work on the site, and if so, whether or not you want to be engaged with the terms and conditions they offer for on-line sales. This is because there are plenty of art sales sites that are better at sales than portfolio sites.
- Portfolio sites tend to help you expand your digital footprint, offer you images of other artists working in the same field to connect with, and have promotional spotlights and periodic events to apply to.
- Make sure to think whether or not a portfolio listing site is right for you before you post your work. Often, posting your work may already be the basis of contractual agreements about usage, distibution, and copyright issues.
